Working in the Northern Territory
The level of ear disease in the Aboriginal population remains much higher than that of the general Australian population, particularly in many rural and remote communities. Chronic ear disease can result in significant hearing loss. This in turn can impact on education, poor social and emotional wellbeing, behavioural problems, and poor social skills. The Hearing and Balance Centre has been working with Northern Territory Hearing Services since 2006.
Our Audiologists carry out up to 12 trips a year (each trip lasting one week) to remote areas of the top end and central Australia. Here they carry out hearing tests on children and adults in remote communities such as Manigrida, Groote Eylandt, Ramingining, Tiwi Islands, Papunya and Booroloola. Our Audiologists work closely with schools, health clinics and others to ensure that individuals with hearing loss are identified and referred for treatment when needed.
