Hearing loss is a common condition, but there are many solutions

One in six Australians is affected by hearing loss. Prevalence rates for hearing loss are associated with increasing age, rising from less than 1% for people aged younger than 15 years to three in every four people aged over 70 years. With an ageing population, hearing loss is predicted to increase to 1 in every 4 Australians by 2050.

Gradual hearing loss is a very common condition.  Genetics and exposure to loud noises are the main factors that contribute to hearing loss. Other factors, such as earwax, can prevent your ears from hearing sounds as well as they should temporarily.

While devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants enhance a person’s ability to communicate, a staggering 85% of people with hearing loss do not have hearing devices which could improve their hearing. There are a number of hearing aid brands and assisstive listening devices on the market, which your audiologist can easily recommend to improve your quality of life. There is no need to suffer in silence.

With the assistance of a qualified audiologist, hearing loss doesn’t have to dramatically affect your life

Loss of hearing is often a gradual process. Hearing loss is invisible and more common than people think. It can have many causes, such as exposure to noise or aging. Even a slight hearing loss can have an impact on your daily life. Hearing loss is treatable and there is no reason to suffer in silence.

Some early warning signs of hearing loss include:

  • People sound like they are mumbling or you only hear parts of conversations
  • Difficulties understanding what people are saying, especially in noisy situations like restaurants, the car, theatre etc
  • Turning your ear toward a sound to hear it better
  • Hearing better through one ear than the other, such as on the phone
  • Not being able to hear people well over the phone

About the authors: The Hearing and Balance Centres

The Hearing and Balance Centre, and tinnitus treatment clinic, was established in 1994 in St Vincent's Hospital Darlinghurst in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.  It is a privately owned and operated audiological practice with two owner/directors Sarah Platt-Hepworth and Vanessa Baillie both of whom are audiologists. Since then they have expanded their service to include a practice in Double Bay, also in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.  As a result of this expansion Bruce Kelsey joined them as director of the Double Bay Hearing Centre in 2006.

What a client has had to say about the Hearing and Balance Centre:

“I was thinking of you the other day, after I had just come off the phone with one of my uni friends. I suddenly realised that I had just had my first phone conversation in which I had actually telephoned someone and had a good old whinge about uni work and presentations in general. In the past, if I wanted a whinge I had to wait until I got to work and Wendy arrived so I could unload, or email someone then wait days before they got back to me. Those days are over, and I can now just pick up the phone, rant and rave for 15 minutes and then hang up and have a chocolate bar and feel instantly better. Isn't it a miracle!”

- excerpt from an email from Karen Baker to the Hearing and Balance audiologists.
